How dry does wood need to be to make furniture?

To make good furniture, wood needs to be properly dried. The ideal moisture level for wood used in indoor furniture is usually between 6% and 8%. If the wood is too wet, it can shrink, crack, or warp as it dries, which can ruin your project. If it’s too dry, it might be brittle or difficult to work with. One way to check the moisture is by using a moisture meter. Most reliable carpentry information will recommend letting wood air dry for several months or using kiln-dried wood for better results. Dry wood is easier to cut, glue, and finish. If you're working in a humid or dry area, it's also good to let the wood adjust to your room for a few days before building. This helps prevent movement later. Using properly dried wood makes your furniture strong, long-lasting, and less likely to change shape over time.
